Well qhat we tend to do when showing budgies or taking them from one house to another is we tend to put the cage on the back seat of the car and cover with a towel or two, this means the budgies are calm as they cannot see anything moving or to distress them, also if you play soem music on the journey etc. then they would also be a bit more calm, if you think the back seat is a bit dodgy then the floor of the car is always an option,
A tip, slamming car doors can spook the birds when in darkness
