Message:   Here's the thing - I'm sitting here contemplating all the different ways to accumulate my 'ill-gotten' gains and have come unstuck for unusual or entertaining concepts! So, on pondering the obvious, I decided that the best way to tackle the problem was to take a bit of an extra gamble and run off my own results; but what really are our options for generating profits? I came up with the following:

1. Buy a lotto ticket every Wednesday & Saturday draw for 50 weeks (£100)

2. 'Invest' in the minimum amount Premium Bonds (£100)

3. Buy some stocks / shares (£100)

4. Stick some cash in a bank / Post Office / Building Society account (£100) and call it my 'control' amount

5. Buy 100 scratch cards(£100)

6. Stick £20 on each of the 'big' races - Grand National, Oaks, 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger.

7. Get a better job (but this doesn't appeal to me as a true option)

Barring number 7, I will commence my 'research' next week and will publish the results here. I appreciate that this is a long experiment, seeing as it is over an extended course of 12 months, but I am sincerely hoping that some of you will join me on a regular basis to consider the odds of actually showing a profit at the end of this. My suggested minimum stake is £600 spread over a period of 12 months. This must not be confused with your regular or 'normal' betting or gambling habits and in order to see a true result, any accumulated winnings should be set aside until the end of the experiment (invest it wisely as all accumulated profits will be included).
All feedback welcome, and I will leave my progress notes here. Now, I really MUST start preparing my column for 'Now You Know'.
Until next time,
Shona Prophett
