Furthermore, the West has made women a favorable commodity, a profit-earning machine, a source of seeking pleasure, and in the bargain she has lost dignity and self-esteem in the Western countries. Moreover, crime against women is on rise in the countries which do not safeguard the honor and prestige of a woman. According to a survey, only 21.5 percent children are born out of wedlock and almost 38 out of 1000 girls are raped in America, which boast of respecting women’s rights and her liberty. Besides, Latin America and Ukraine are the top exporters of women into international trafficking, which has become a lucrative business for organized crime.
What could be a better proof of woman’s honor in Islam than the honor bestowed upon a female slave, Hajra. In the history of Islam no one has ever had the right to be buried in a mosque except one Hajra, a slave woman, who was also the second wife of Prophet Abraham (AS) and the mother of Ismail (AS), who had been given this privilege to be buried in the greatest mosque in the world, the Masjid al-haram in Makkah.
There were some women in the past who have been a perfect example of an ideal Islamic woman. Fatima, the beloved daughter of Prophet Mohammed (p.b.u.h) was the ideal that Islam wanted a woman to be. Dr. Ali Shariati writes about her, “She was a symbol for all the various dimensions of womanhood. She was the perfect model of a daughter when dealing with her father. She was the perfect model of a wife when dealing with her husband. She was the perfect model of a mother when raising her children. She was the perfect model of a responsible, fighting woman when confronting her time and the fate of her society. She kept alive the spirit of those who seek justice and oppose oppression and discrimination in Islamic society. She was a manifestation and a symbol of the Way and essential direction of ‘Islamic thought.” (Fatima is Fatima).
There is no escaping the fact that Islam has honored and treated women in a way that no other Civilization, Culture or Society has ever done. Islam regards the love of woman as a sign of faith. Prophet of Islam (AS) once said, “I do not think that a man gets better in faith without loving women better”.
It is therefore, unambiguous that Islamic system offers perfect mixture of both freedom and security to a woman. The present time of reassessing and reconsidering the role and right of a woman is the right time to recapitulate the Islamic point of view. That would impart a right lesson to the Western countries. Indeed.
