A.M.U. RESERVATION CANCELLED
This is in reference to the verdict of Allahabad High Court against the reservation policy of Aligarh Muslim University. In the judgement the Hon’ble High Court has observed that AMU is not a minority institution and hence cannot make provisions for reserving 50% seats. In order to discuss the repercussions of the judgement and to chalk out the further line of action, an urjent General Body Meeting was held on 5th October, 2005 in the Union Hall. AMU Student Union has seeked the cooperation of the student fraternity to take legitimate action against this decision.
The 50% reservation for muslim candidates was granted by the union HRD minister Arjun Singh in his visit to the University earlier this year. University implemented this reservation policy in the ongoing academic year. The decision of the Hon’ble High Court is going to adversely affect those students who have been given admission on this policy. Students of the university are extremely upset by this decision. A student, namely Anjum Husain said that AMU is certainly a minority institute and minority reservation is our statutory right. Although some students, though not many in number, held different views. “ If we have the potential to compete with others then why do we fritter our energy in demanding the reservation at all in the first place”, asserted a Psychology student Masood-ul-Hasan.
However, the student union of AMU is likely to stage a dharna in front of the Parliament House in New Delhi against the High Court decision.
In yet another incident in the AMU campus, three students from Bihar were mercilessly beaten by a group of students from Ghazipur. A mere scuffle between the two students turned into a ‘regional’ battle. The three injured are admitted in the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, Aligarh. The condition of two of them is said to be critical. One patient’s eye has been seriously damaged and other’s leg has been broken. Doctors said that both the patients are not still out of danger.
