Message:   Will Congress prefer to stay out of power?

The tenure of Mufti-led coalition government is about to complete and now it is the turn of Congress to lead from the front. But the question that would be striking the minds of the Congress high command is how are they going to respond to the much hyped ‘healing touch’ policy of Mufti’s government. If Congress takes the charge, then there are possibilities that the party will suffer badly in the near future. Congress high command should bear one thing in mind that they can not assume office at the cost of losing the forthcoming assembly elections. So far Mufti’s healing touch policy has worked well and a common Kashmri has at last found a solace in Mufti’s governance.
In this scenario, if Congress steps in, it would have to face loads of criticism both in and outside. Mufti’s government has been better, if not the best, when it comes to the overall development of the state. New roads have been built, Universities and degree colleges have been established, tourism industry has been improved, unemployment has been brought down, and much more. In short, they have hardly left any stone unturned towards the development of the state. On the other hand, if Congress forms a government now the people will start comparing the two governments and PDP. would be holding the upper hand. This is owing to the fact that they have utilised special grants given by the Central government, like the one which the PM gave earlier this year during his visit to J&K. There is hardly anything left for the Congress, provided they get some special economic package from the Central government. Literally speaking, Congress has to start from a scratch.
With Mufti’s innings over, his party will be now busy picking holes with Congress as a political expedient. However, this is a golden opportunity for the Congress to break the jinx and win more hearts in the valley, only if it carries on being a part of the PDP led coalition and make serious and resolute efforts to solve the Kashmir imbroglio and work for the development of the state, rather than claiming to form the government at this crucial juncture, that would seriously hamper their cause.
