Message:   Save 17th Century poet Ghani Kashmiris
House

The 17th century poet ghani kashmiri is among the most famous persian poets that the
subcontinent has produced. In his lifetime his fame spread beyond the borders of India and
persians acknowledged him as one of the great masters of persian poetry. In India he exerted a great influence on development of persian and urdu poetry and the great urdu poet Mirza Ghalib translated more than 40 of his couplets into urdu.
In mohalla Syed Sahib Rajouri Kadal there is a house which is reputed to be the house in which Ghani Kashmiri lived.Near the house there is an abandoned graveyard where Ghani is reputed to be buried. The government acquired the house circa 1960 and established a Ghani Memorial Library in the house, but after that completely neglected it so that now the house is completely ruined and derelict and can fall down any time. This would be a great cultural loss for all persian and urdu speaking people in general and the Kashmiris in particular as Ghani although a great persian poet was neverthless a kashmiri. The graveyard near the house where Ghani is reputed to be buried is also being encroached upon and if no action is taken immediately there is a great chance that in a few years all traces of the house and Ghanis grave would disappear.
I appeal to all lovers of poetry and kashmirs cultural heritage to write to to the Government of Jammu & Kashmir to take urgent steps to preserve Ghanis House and Grave which are our cultural heritage.
