Fish Oil
My Dad got me some fish oil the other day, but I don't know if it is any good, or worth using. And I want to make sure I use some with the right ingredients in it, and that will help and not just be a crappy brand. He got this hugggge bottle at Sam's Club, 300 Tablets. My questions is, what do I want in the fish oil, anything I don't want in it? And how much am I suppose to take a day, and when? A few months ago when looking through my sis-in-laws health books, almost all of them suggested Fishl Oil for endo, but hadn't given it a try yet, and a few of you on here has said it has helped you. But I just want to make sure I get a good dose of it! It says 1000 mg of natural fish oil concentrate, 180 mg of EPA, and 120 mg of DHA. Then in ingredients it says Fish oil concentrate, Gelatin,Glycerin, d-Sorbitol, and d-Alpha Tocopherol. If you know anything about this please let me know!!! |

Hi, I copied this from Dr. Lam. If you go to the natural page, he has some suggestions. Omega-3 Fatty Acid - Eating 8 oz of fish a week is all you need to do. Otherwise, take 1,000 mg from fish oil to contain 360 mg EPA and 240 mg DHA. Most people taking fish oil have a tendency to develop a fishy " burp". Over 60 research studies have shown that a variety of ailments from arthritis to heart disease can benefit from fish oil (not cod liver oil which contains a high dose of Vitamin A and D which are toxic in high doses). 400 IU of Vitamin E should be taken simultaneously to potentiate the effect of fish oil. I see your does have vitamin E in it-tocopherol. I think the other ingrediants are standard-what mine has in it. My dr. used to give it to me in a bottle, but now I have the pills. It contains EPA 420 mg. & DHA 300mg. I take one in the morning & 1 at night. Maybe you can add a serving a week of salmon to your diet to make sure you are getting enough? You know that is great Rachel that your dad purchased it for you, you do have have to remember that most people do not believe that nutrition can have an impact. I tried to convince my neighbor and she just kind of said yeah in disbelief & it was not until she became very sick did she start to believe in it. Now she comes over to my house to heat up her disgusting herbal teas from her accupuncturist & preaches the natural route just as I do. It is very good your father is trying! Blessings sent to you, I hope tommorow is a better day for you. Lori |

Well my Dad doesn't exactly think the natural route will help, just the other day he was telling me I need to do what the doctors want me to try, and forget about the natural route. So it was kind of weird when he called the other day and asked if I needed any supplements. And so I told him I was planning on getting the fish oil. He is using it himself for his gaut he had. He did a lot of research online for it I guess, but then got some really expensive oil. Well mine only says 180 of EPA, and 120 of DHA, but 1000 mg of the fish oil. Is that ok? If not I can get some other stuff. He said he would just use mine if I didn't want to use it. Should I just take two a day then? And is it suppose to be taken with meals. Yeah I usually do eat fish like once a week. Didn't the last week though, was gone almost the whole week and busy. But I'll tell my Mom to get some more fish. Thanks for the reply! |

You know I am not an expert Rachel, but I would think 2 a day would be good and to use what you have, but also try to include fish as much as you can in your diet and as much vegetables as you can if it does not mess with the IC. Brocolli & Cauliflower especially. Perhaps try to help your father out also, if it works for him...My friend's father had gout & said cherry juice took it away. Hi Rachel, I seem to have the same dosage of pills as Lori (L, are you taking the Mega Omega?). I don't have the bottle with me but the dosage seems right. However, I take 4 a day (2 am, 2 pm) and I eat fish several times a week. Like what you've been reading Rachel, she wanted me at about 1000 mg a day (I believe 2 capsules is the dosage Lori posted--I'd have to check my bottle when I get home) so I needed 4. Rachel, as you know, the fish oil put me in heaven. Melanie |

I checked the label on my fish oil last night and it's the same as Lori's for one capsule. And as I mentioned, I take 4 a day. Guess my doctor thinks I need extra! Melanie |

Hi Girls Yes that is the one I take Melanie, I do like the pills better than the liquid I was taking, it is much easier. I guess I am going to start cutting down on my supplements soon. I am also on a metabolic diet to lose weight. Well all that is good! talk later, Lori

Hi Rachel. I would definitely take it with your meals. Take one am and one pm. Also, Lori mentioned the tendency toward fish burps. To help alleviate this you can freeze them. Good luck and let us know how it goes. I seem to be one of those lucky people who responds pretty quickly to all these supplements, but please try to give yourself some time. :) And I"m so glad to hear the counseling is going well. I'm able to see my therapist again because I no longer see my naturpath every month (I have to pay out of pocket for both). :) It feels good to be on a path where I am taking care of myself physically, mentally and spiritually all at the same time. Cheers, Melanie |

Hey Lori. Yeah, I was glad when she gave me pills rather than liquid. It's just a lot easier for me to take pills than to have to try to swallow another liquid I do not like! So now are you up to 29 pills? And how come you're going to start cutting back on supplements? It sounds like good news though... And what kind o metabolic diet are you on? Not that I'm interested in losing weight, but I'm always interested in what you're doing. It's too bad we don't live closer, I could use a new workout partner. I get so bored when I run/bike ride by myself or workout in the weight room. I have resorted to listening to my iPod (against the advice of my ENT as I am hearing impaired) when for more than a dozen years I have been going to the gym I have never listened to music. But, at least I'm still working out, right? How are you feeling these days? Melanie PS I'm be away for awhile as m sis-in-law has surgery tomorrow and I'm taking some time off to help her as she recovers. Then I'll head out of town for a few days. I hope ya'll have a wonderful rest of the week. OH! Can I make a special prayer request... I am doing some blood work tomorrow so the Red Cross can run further tests to see if I might be a match for a woman who needs a bone marrow transplant. I am a preliminary match at the level of 6 antigens; please pray that I (or someone else) might be a perfect match so she can get the bone marrow she needs... |

So if I freeze them to help the fish burps, does that mean I freeze them then take one out everytime and just take it frozen? Or just freeze it for a day then take them out for good? Also am I going to smell like fish taking them? ~Rachel |

HI Rachel. Just keep them in the freezer and take them while they are frozen. And no, you will NOT smell like fish all day! Aside from an occasional burp, there is no other fishyness! M. |

Hi Rachel, I do not have a problem with a fishy smell either. I take my vitamins after breakfast. Lori
