Endo recurring after non related hysterectomy?

Hi all,

Just a bit of a question/whinge! I am now 34 and was diagnosed with endo at 19. I had laser removal of adhesions followed by 6 months of danazol. I was told I could have trouble conceiving. However, I fell pregnant with no 1 about three months after completing the Danazol course. So over the next nine years I was either pregnant, breastfeeding or on progestrone only contraceptives. After no 4 was born in June 2004 I had a massive post partum bleed and had an emergency hysterectomy taking uterus and cervix but leaving ovaries. I started feeling ordinary within about twelve months of the hysterectomy. I have seen my GP numerous times complaining of bowel problems, UTI/cystitis, fatigue and pelvic pain. I never considered endo because of the hysterectomy. They have treated me for depression and told me I have too much stress in my life. Yesterday I trotted in again compaining of urinary problems. She did the usual checks decided it could be appendicitis and sent me to emergency where I had further tests and a CT which ruled out appendix. However, the surgeon noticed my lap scars and asked why. When I told him he said it is possible that I have endo again. I feel very frustrated and am wondering how many women have recurring endo after children and/or a hysterectomy? Also, what treatment options do they offer now? I feel a bit ripped off as I thought I was finished with womens problems!

Re: Endo recurring after non related hysterectomy?

Hi Kathryn,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having pai again. Unfortunately hysterectomies are not a cure for endo. Some women find relief after them and some don't. Even though your uterus was removed endo could be on your ovaries, or anywhere else in the area. That can be what is causing your pain. so even if they went back in and took out your ovaries you could still have endo pain because the dr's would have to get all the endo out which is really hard to do. does that make sense? Some doctors continue to tell women that hysterectomy=a cure for endo but it's not true. I hope that you find some answers and some relief from your pain.

"Sampson's Theory Doesn't Work"
All of these articles are very interesting and enlightening, but that one in particular explains why this theory is flawed, and why endo can be active after a total hyst.

Re: Endo recurring after non related hysterectomy?

I agree with Becky's answer. Just this week, I had a conversation with my doctor about a hysterectomy after I finish having children. He told me that he doubts it will relieve my pain due to the location of my endo - most endo was found where the uterus meets the vagina. He can't remove my vagina. (Sorry for the graphic details). And as long as I have estrogen flowing through my body - naturally or the replacement therapy - I will probably have pain from the endo.
I hope that you receive a more positive diagnosis that "endless endo pain". I can't imagine your disappointment after thinking that you would be free from this dreadful disease!!
Good luck and many prayers headed your way.

Re: Endo recurring after non related hysterectomy?

Hello,
I read your message and just had to reply. The reason the endo is back is because it is fed by hormones. When the doctor left your ovaries in, you continued to produce hormones which fed the endo. I was 18 when I found out I had it. I am now 42. I had some serious issues with it. My doctor use to call me the endometriosis queen. I suffered for years and finally had to have the hysterectomy. (that surgery was a nightmare and has a story all of its own!) They left one overy in (the other one had been removed when I was 15 due to a tumor). This caused the endo to continue to grow and caused a lot of pain. I had to go back and have it removed. I had to have other surgeries to fix the problems that the surgeon caused, but other than that, I think I am now endo free.
Just thought I would share, thanks for reading,

Valerie

Re: Endo recurring after non related hysterectomy?

Hi all,

Thank you for your replies. I have seen the gyno and he doesn't believe iot is endo. He thinks it may be adhesions from the hyster which from what I understand would cause similar symptoms just not cyclical. As i don't have much of a clue regarding my cycle anymore I didn't argue. I have to have an ultrasound to check my ovaries, a colonoscopy (yuck!) and than probably a lap as well. Hopefully out of all these they will work something out and I'll at least know what I'm dealing with.

Kathryn.
