celiac disease - rash - gluten questions - please help
Can anyone help me with some information about gluten intolerance and celiac disease? This may be a long story to get to the point, but I'll try to condense it . . . I'm allergic to penicillin, around 7 or 8 years ago I developed a rash on my elbows, hips, knees that would not go away, even after treatment with steroids . . .after 2 or 3 dermatologists I finally made it to one that did a skin biopsy and determined that the rash was due to something ingested . . . he really didn't know what, but suggested I try cutting beef from my diet (because of the antibiotics administered to beef before slaughter) . . .well, 2 weeks later the rash was gone. So I have a beef allergy - kind of. Now I wish I could say I never eat beef . . .but I cheat sometimes . . . and I can occasionally get by with cheating several times in a row with no rash . . .and then other times it doesn't work so well and I'll have to get treated with steroids to get rid of it and I'll be really good for a while and not eat any beef. Recently I cheated (a lot) and I got a rash . . . I ended up taking a shot and round of oral steroids, and the last day of treatment I got a new rash - all on my elbows . . . then a little on my knees . . . I've just had another shot and finished another round of oral steroids, and the rash is worse than when it started . . . So I'm researching and trying to find any info on what might be going on . . . my doc said I'd have to see another dermatologist (or the same one that diagnosed the beef allergy actually) . . .but I am thinking of seeing an allergist . . . but my research led me to a rash associated with Celiac Disease and gluten allergy. I remembered that Lori and others on this site have some gluten issues as well so I thought someone on here might be able to give me some input on what is going on with me. I got an appt with an allergist for next Wed, but I'm itching so bad right now I'm going to call around tomorrow and try and get a sooner appt. I would appreciate any information you guys have and also your prayers . . . I know it is just a rash, but it is driving me crazy. Also, all of the steroids I've taken over the last 3 weeks are wreaking havoc on my moods and my body as well. Thanks everyone! Amber |

Hello Amber, My favorite girls name as it is my daughters too. I have never heard of a beef intolerance, wow, but I certainly do not know everything. I have a gluten intolerance, but it does not give immediate symptoms as this. Only weight gain and bad for my health.......But my best friend has celiac disease. The drs. dismissed it for years. The main symptom besides diareah is the rash on her elbow. She tried several steroid creams and they did not work. Since she gave up gluten, it has dissapeared! Yes I agree steroids are bad. Perhaps and hopefully this is another route to pursue then? I do not really agree with the way they diagnose celiac disease at the md drs. -with a bioposy. But there is an easier way-a stool test that measures antibodies produced from the foods. I will have to look this up for you. It is 99.00 for the lab test. Maybe I wrote it somewhere here on this forum? Let me know if you want further info and I will try to find it. I had all tests done and it was determined -soy, dairy and gluten intolerances. The rash really points to this. Maybe is is with beef too then? I am praying the Lord reveals this to you dear! Love in Christ and let me know if any other questions. Lori

Lori - thanks for your reply. If you can give me any websites or info on a gluten free diet I would love it. One thing I read said not to stop eating gluten before seeing a doc, because it would not show up on tests . . . of course, I'm figuring if you get better from not eating it there isn't much else to know. If you don't mind sharing . . . when did you develop the gluten intolerance (and others too)? How did you figure out what it was? Is it terribly difficult eating gluten free? It sounds like it could be. And since I already can't eat beef . . . (I'm finding that the longer I've had the problem, the less beef it takes to cause the rash, and the longer it takes for it to go away.) Also, I've been trying to buy antibiotic free chicken to cook at home, because the feed and water given to chickens is full of antibiotics too. Of course, we live in rural OK, and my cousin raises cattle so when we get a calf from him and have it butchered I can eat it as long as it was only grass fed. Besides the chicken and beef - I'm sure that pork is probably given antibiotics before slaughter as well. So I guess maybe all of them together are making it worse. . . and just recently I've begun to wonder about dairy products. I figure that the penicillin could be passed through the milk. Well, I digress somewhat, but I'm about to go nuts from this rash and I'm excited to think that I may have found a cause that I can fix. Thanks again for any help you can give me! Amber |

Oh yeah. I vaguely remember reading about someone with a beef reaction (actually an anaphylactic reaction) also to the penicillin in the beef . . . anyway I thought somewhere in the article they said something about gluten in beef. It doesn't really make sense to me though. Is there any reason you can think of that there would be gluten in beef? |

Hey Amber, I'm not too sure about the celiac/gluten intolerance only that I know I have an aunt and a cousin with it. She kept miscarrying from it (her body was too "busy" fighting the allergy to maintain a pregnancy) until some one at that church mentioned that celiac could be to blame. Most animals that are raised on "farms" (they are mostly feed lots these days) are given antibiotics because of close proximity and that a lot of time they are walking around in poo, there is no grass. JUst check the labels on everything for statements such as "antibiotic free, free range, grass fed, no growth hormones", etc. Milk carries all the hormones, antibiotics, etc. that the cow consumes, just like breastmilk in humans. Indulging in something you are allergic to can sometimes be ok, but often the allergy gets worse over time. Be careful, because some allergies can cause you to go into anaphylactic shock which can cause death. I don't mean to scare you, but allergies are serious stuff. I would probably make an appt with an allergist so that you can find out exactly what you are (or aren't) allergic to and what to expect.. That should make things simpler when it comes to planning out your diet and let you know if you need to make some lifestyle changes. I hope things look up for you! Rashes are definitely NOT on my fun list. God bless, Steph |

Hey Amber I have had stomach issues for yrs that had been getting worse with time. I had a endoscopy/colonoscopy that showed negative for Celiac. I saw a naturopathic dr and she ran blood work. The bloodwork was negative for Celiac, although my bloodwork showed major defiencies. Low iron, ferritin, Vitamin D, etc., which is common of a gluten prob. She said that she believes I have Celiac even though the tests say no. It may not be enough damage to show up. I don't eat gluten, can't eat dairy or red meat. I eat chicken only a few times a month. It is true that if your going to go to dr and try to get a diagnosis of Celiac you shouldn't stop eating gluten until after being tested. I feel better not eating gluten so I decided not to pursue further testing. Enterolab has a Celiac stool test. www.celiac.com is a great wesite with all kinds of info and advice. The diet isn't easy at first and you will have moments where you feel you don't want to stick to it, but its worth it to feel better. I have found some great cereal, cookies, pancake mix, noodles, etc. Hope this helps. Melissa |

Thank you for the posts and info. I really appreciate it. I'm soooo tempted to change my diet now, but I'm determined to find out what is going on. I saw an allergist on Thurs, and I'm scheduled for Patch testing a week from mon (5/19)and I'll see the doc on 5/21 to discuss all of the results etc. She is also getting all of my old med records that she can in order to put together an entire picture. I really liked her, and she seems like she is really interested in getting to the bottom of my rash issue. The worst part is I can't even take any otc antihistimines for 7 days before doing the test. Yeah! All of your prayers for me to endure the itching between now and then would be greatly appreciated - as well as prayers for an answer and a cure!!! I'm trying to do as much research as I can in the meantime on celiac diet and also a vegetarian diet, because I know I may have to go off all meat! Any help on these would be great too. Thanks again for all of your input and prayers! I love this website!! |
