Just had an inquiry from a visitor at the site who said they were depressed, wanting to get off drugs, needed to prepare themself and wanted to do it by themself.
This request is of course very broad in nature and would not be able to give any specific advice..
As to where to start depends on the nature of the addiction, the degree of involment, the knowledge and experience of the individual.
First it would be very appropriate to extend my congratulations and to applaud the courage needed to take perhaps the most important step into recovery...
This obviously is a major undertaking and needs 110% of effort and commitment.
I would strongly suggest that you change your position about doing it alone, you will need one on one support and guidance. It is possible that the thought to do it alone is coming from a part of you ( an introject) that is doing more harm than good.
All of the information on this site will help you to get prepared..and will support your intentions ...
AS outlined on the addictions page in Phase IV , one could become free by processing the feelings of withdrawal.. but this is extremely difficult without developing the skills... To prepare yourself you need to educate yourself and begin to do a great deal of feeling work..As further explained on the site it takes a great deal of time to develop the skills and endurance required to process the addiction..
It is my understanding that with certain drugs you may need help with the physical withdraw also..I do not know if that is true or another informercial for the drug companies..
As of this time we do not have a specific page dealing with drug addiction..this will be incuded in the future.
My personal drug of choice was alchohol.Eventhough I had a chronic addiction with it I just stopped cold turkey on 12/31/87..with no slips or reoccurances. No physical problems at all. I did have some thoughts to indulge but knew I couldn't " go there" anymore...then my recovery started a couple years later as I explain at this site..
My smoking addiction took three whole weeks of feeling the withdrawal pain, no patches or anything to supplement the process...it took me about three years to get to that point.. To say that it was well worth it is an understatement...besides as we all know these days time flies by so quickly.. so three-four weeks is a drop in the bucket..
THe only advice I can give now is that the information on this site will help prepare you..
Remember ( and don't let it discourage you )after you stop your drug addiction then the real work begins.. You need a professional that is familar with your situation to help you and you need the support of a support group or two...
I also hope that this site encourages you to pursue your desire to get off drugs..
Please stay in touch and share your journey..
