We sometimes make napkin rings. You'll need felt (depending on which holiday the child's family celebrates), cardboard patterns you've made, and a package of napkins. I get a large package of Bounty winter prints. Make a pattern about 1 inch high and about 6 inches long. It should be sort of shaped like a long dog bone. This is the part you will wrap around the napkin, the center of a flower. Make a pattern for a flower, such as a pointsettia, about 3 inches in diameter, or a star. The child traces two flowers and 1 long piece for each napkin ring onto colored felt, and cut them out. Fiskars scissors wok well. Show the child how to cut a nickel-sized hole in the center of each flower. Roll up a napkin and wrap the bone-shape around the middle of the napkin. Hold the ends together, and slide on the two flower parts. They really look nice, and each child can make one for each family member. Ties in with Math, Social Studies, and even Health standards! |
