Green Building Products

How do we trust a product to be truly green if it says it is on the label?

Re: Green Building Products

In this present day, everyone is scrambling to jump on the green building band wagon. Reports are coming in from the front lines that at every trade show for building, more and more products are popping up with the word 'green' on their labels.

I would suggest that the consumer ask their salesperson this question: "What makes your product green?" If the salesperson dodges the questions or says "Because it says so on the box", then find a more knowledgable salesperson or take it upon yourself to research what you are getting.

For instance, not all bamboo floor is green. You have to remember that the vast majority of bamboo used in the making of flooring comes from China and that although bamboo is ultra-renewable, China lacks a lot of the regulations that help make a product green. The curing of Bamboo in formaldehyde is a common practice in China. This is a very dangerous thing to have in your home. Also, the waste waters and materials from the production of bamboo flooring are most often times dumped into rivers which are the source of water for towns down stream from the processing plants.

As you can see, just because products allign themselves with the word green, doesn't mean they are... Please psot a comment to this post. whether you agree or disagree, post your thoughts please.

Re: Green Building Products

Thank you for the reply Eric. Folks, together Eric and I have researched tons of products and even helped to expose those products or companies that were green washing.

Picking the right products starts with having the right team in place. I feel that Eric Hughes and his design firm Image Design is hands down the most cutting edge and knowledgeable design firm there is in Michigan! That is why he is part of Team Hybrid...

Re: Green Building Products

Hey Adam, Does PEX tubing for plumbing have better advantages than ordinary PVC and would this be considered green. I recently invested in a tool for crimping PEX, which was $100, I replaced my water heater and used Pex for the plumbing leading to the water heater and now am contipating revamping my whole plumbing system with PEX. The previous owner of my house used copper and I think by bringing in the copper I could basically pay for the PEX upgrade.
