Subject:   Brain Damaged Fire Fighter Awakens after 10 Years

Message:   Brain-Damaged Man Awakens After 10 Years

Firefighter Donald Herbert, who suffered brain damage in
1995, spoke to family and friends for the first time since
the accident last weekend, Fox News reported.

Herbert was fighting a house fire when the roof collapsed,
burying him in debris. He was without air for several
minutes, spent the next two months in a coma and has since
been unable to communicate. News reports indicated he had
little or no memory.

Herbert continued to receive physical therapy throughout
the 10-year ordeal. Last Saturday he surprised staff at
the skilled nursing facility where he lives by asking to
speak to his wife -- the beginning of 14 hours of
conversation to follow.

Herbert was not aware of how much time had passed,
thinking it had been a matter of months. After learning
of his injuries, he wanted to spend time hearing about his
family, mainly his four sons.

"It's almost unheard of after 10 years," said Dr. Rose
Lynn Sherr of New York University Medical Center, "but
sometimes things do happen and people suddenly improve and
we don't understand why."
