Fire Chief Dies While Responding To Call

Sept 6, 2005, 12:28 AM

A false alarm turned fatal for a fire chief in Breathitt County.

Police said Henry James "Jim" Combs was responding to what he thought was a house fire, when he wrecked in a curve on Route 1278, just outside of Jackson. Combs died as a result of the accident.

Fire officials said they lost one of their best to a call that turned out to only be someone grilling outside.

"Jim did a lot of volunteer work. He was a minister, he was a master mason, and he was involved with the church real heavy and just had a heart of gold and couldn't say no to anybody," said fellow firefighter Carroll Forsythe.

Funeral arrangements for Watts Fire Chief Jim Combs have not been set.
