Shortly after, an estimated 15,000 of the endangered turtles began making their way to the ocean. Every year, tourists flock to the area to see the migration. Olive Ridley turtles live to be more than 50 years old and can travel more than 15,000 miles through the ocean during a lifetime. The Mexican government is helping to protect the turtles. The Mexican Navy helps watch over the eggs for the 45 days it takes them to hatch. Poachers are the eggs' biggest threat. Believed to be an aphrodisiac, the eggs are a sought-after delicacy in Mexico.
