horse 'dishing'

I am trying to find if slight 'dishing' on the rear legs can cause injury to the pony. I have heard that on the front legs it can be quite dangerous. Grateful for any comment.

Re: horse 'dishing'

Hi Steve.
Dishing is not an uncommon problem and in the front feet makes the horse clumsy and causes excessive strain on the joints, ligaments and tendons. The same is true with regards to the back legs. However owing to the fact that horses carry their wieght at about 70/30 dishing in the hind limb is less of a hinderence to movement. Speak with your farrier about corrective shoeing. He may be able to alter the balence of the horses rear feet to help the animal compensate for the defect and move a little truer.
Good luck Joe.
