Programming and Networking careers

Hello Folks:

I am a person with a disability whom has been out of the workforce for a few years, but I have taken a Web Page Design and Graphic Communication course through distance education and am now getting to the point where I will be able to enter back into the workforce.

Yesterday I dropped into talk to a Persons with disabilities career counsellor about getting a job in the IT market. He said that I had to decide which way I wanted to go with it, that being, either the Programming route or Networking route. Well, I've done much web searching over the last 24 hours and I am deludged with so much info I can't get a clearer meaninmg on the two chioces.

Is programming working with things like I have some experience with ex; Pagemaker Pesktop Publishing, Corel Graphics, Microsoft

Front Page, etc. and the Networking path being more intense as that of a systems analyist or such?

If you could help me I would really appreciate it casue I am experiencing information overload and getting even more confused.

Thanks you for your time and possible help.

Respectfully,

Jim Mitchell

Re: Programming and Networking careers

jim,

it seems to me that from your previous work, u r more of application user.

programming is more like of creating an application for users. for example, corel graphics as an application and u being as a user. have u ever imagine how corel graphics was built? that's where programming kicks in. u see corel graphics is a product of programming where people use other programming languages to create the functionalities u use in corel graphics. i'm not particularly sure what they've used to create corel graphics but i could tell u some of programming languages. It can be java, visual basic, C++, C# etc. they use these languages to build application according to clients' needs. further, people in programming are very much involve in data/technical analysis so they could better design an efficient application(s).

networking is more on hardware and there's also analysis inlvolve. for example in a company, there may be a lot of employees using corel graphics. it will be tedious to install corel on each employee's PC. now, that's where networking comes in. they design the environment or the connectivity of users such that they will be able to install application without physically installing it on each PC. there are a lot things that networking can be done. just thinking it in layman's term network, connection. in real life, we create our network to friends through phone, email etc. in computer, how can people share their files, softwares etc? now that's what the networking people do. they use application, cables etc. so that computers can connect. efficiency on how users connected, that's where analysis is being use.

in your case since u r experienced using corel, page maker, why don't u apply to companies that maybe using these kind of applications? it could be in advertising company etc.

hope this helps.

goodluck!
