My recommendation would be java. Java is a nice cross platform language that works well with the Internet. If you are needing to communicate with a unix server, Java is probably the best way to go since you could have the same app on both the client and the server communicating via Java protocals. I have not done much work with Java so I'm not sure how easy it is to communicate with COM and USB ports.
I am personally doing alot of work in C#. I like C# since it is very similar to C++ and because I do most of my work on Windows based platforms. However there are alot of disadvantages to using C#. C# is not a very popular language yet and in order to run the .NET platform, users have to install the .NET framework on their machines. This is an optional download and is currently only available for Windows 98, ME, XP, and 2000. Older computers cannot run C# applications using .NET. Also a downside to using C# is that you would not be able to run it on your Unix server. You would still need to write a seperate application on the server to communicate with your client machines. Give C# another year and I think that it will surpass Java. (My personal opinion.)
I don't know much about Perl. I haven't had a chance to do much programming in it.
I hope this is of some use to you. Whatever choice you make the intelinfo.com site has plenty of tutorials for Java, C#, and Perl to help you out.

Hi,
In my company, I do programming in unibasic, in Unidata, on a unix system. I've come to a place where I need to do something I've not done before.
I need to set up a PC based point-of-sale station at a remote store. I've got to write a program for this PC to work with the PC attached hardware (cash drawer, scanner, etc.) connected to COM, USB and/or parallel ports. Also, this program has to be able to connect to our unix server, via the internet, which will house all the data (barcode info, inventory, pricing, etc.)
MY QUESTION:
I'm going to have to learn a new programming language to do this. What would be best, C#, java, perl, other?
If possible, please add a quick note as to why you think your recommendation would be best. It'll help me to make my decision.
