Sorry got my school name mixed up.
It was not St Joseph's but it was called St. Anthony's High School.
Welcome to the site.
Was the St Anthony school behind the Crescent on Bandar Gadid road. I can remember visiting another school in Steamer Point for a football match.
I do not remember the name of the road now, but this school was located near the main road that went on past the Cable & Wireless Office building and went on to Gold Mohur Club. Our school was a few kilometers before this building. Their was the Fatima Girls Convent School on the main road and the boys school was behind it right next to the rocks. The access to the boys school was from two narrow roads running on either side of the girls school.
We did have a big soccer field in our school and we had a lot of fun playing the games.
During our time, there were only 2 English medium schools in Steamer point, one each for boys and girls. The other English language schools were in Crater and I cannot remember the names. If I remember correctly our school had a Italian priest as the Principal, a father John, there was also a vice principal and a Headmaster called TV (T.V. Morrais).
Aden has changed a lot as per the Google Earth images from our time back in 1969 which was soon after their independence from UK.
Using Google Earth the location of the Church of St Francis of Assisi is 12 47'18.84N, 44 58'46.86E and if you zoom into this location you will see a wall running behind the church complex. St Anthonys is located behind that wall. It was appropriated by the Yemeni Government and has not been restituted to the Church. More on this in the notes under my photograph of the Church on my web site page at http://www.onstuis.co.uk/steamer.html
Hi again Madhukar,
By the way, the picture placed on Google Earth entitled "St Anthonys" by Abo Al-Majd near to the location I gave you is not only incorrectly placed and named but he claims copyright on the photograph which was 'lifted' from my web site without consent and is in fact the Church of St Francis of Assisi and not the school St Anthonys! He has not even bothered to change my (intially incorrect) file name!!
Shame on him!!
Your website is so informative on the subject of Aden.
The building of the church of St. Francis of Assisi reminds me of my sister's school which probably was using the Church and its facilities. I believe it was called Fatima Girls Convent School and went from Grade 1 to O'Levels (Form 4 or 5).
Hi Madhukar. I am a past student of St. Anthony's High School, Steamer Point, Aden. I was in Std iv in the year 1967. Shifted to Pune, India in the same year.Where are you at the moment and which class were you in '67.My father had a shop at Steamer Point.
Nice to find someone from that era of the school.
We came to Aden in 1969 and at that time I went straight to grade 9 (Form 2). I was there for only 3 years but had a great time.
What was your father's shop called or dealt in, because we used to walk from the bus stand at Steamer Point all the way past the market and to the school.
I am now in North America, how about yourself.
Bye for now.
