Re: Mementos from Aden

Jonathan
I, too, had a Seiko diver's watch, bought in Crescent on a visit to Aden by HMS Bulwark with 42 Commando RM in 1961. I think I paid 20 Dinars for it ( I was probably seen off!) and it served me well for 25 years until the automatic winder gave up the ghost. A local jeweller sent it off to Seiko for me and the reply from them was that they no longer stocked the parts for that model, but that I could choose another similar Seiko watch from any jeweller that stocked them. I still have the replacement watch and am wearing it as I write this.
I have a few other bits and pieces from 66/67 - mostly military stuff.
Regards
Vic

Re: Mementos from Aden

i have a really heavy saucepan. mum still uses a striped towel as shower mat. We have 2 camphorwood chests, one in my home and one in mum's, a Noritake complete dinner service that i'm pretty sure came from Aden. I'm certain there are quite a few more items. Many photos in mum's loft in slide form, wish i could get up there!

I still have the Kenwood CHef which I'm pretty certain my parents bought in Aden around 1966 as well as my father's Omega Watch.

Re: Mementos from Aden

I still have various items from Wong and Sons' Trading Company - dressing gowns, pyjamas, a cheongsam and a pincushion, all in Chinese silk, and also a Sankyo Super 8 cinecamera and Zeiss Ikon Contina camera that my father bought. I have a little transistor radio in a lovely leather case and lots of mementos such as cigarette lighters, key rings and ornamental goods - Chinese lanterns and similar. There is a big collection of linen - embroidered tablecloths and napkins - that I think my mother bought in Wong's. We used to prowl the shops in the Crescent regularly on the lookout for interesting items! Some wicker garden chairs and tables on iron frames have lasted surprisingly well and are still in use.

Rosalind (Aden 1964-66).

Re: Mementos from Aden

Yes Rosaline, I remember Wongs very well. We got padded jackets there and I remember feeling like an Eskimo trying them on. Being used to hot weather they were such a novelty

Re: Mementos from Aden

Also had the Kenwood Chef which we gave to a charity shop. Wish I still had it to be honest.
Also have a basket weave linen basket that we had in N5 back in the early 50's.

Re: Mementos from Aden

My dad (Bob Lambkin) was based in Aden from 1954 to 1963, my mother joined him in 1959 and they were married in Aden. My mother (Joyce Lambkin) was a keen golfer and I have found some silver spoons she received, inscribed with "LAGA" Little Aden Golf Association which were given out as monthly medals. My dad was a very keen rugby player and I have lots of photos, but no dates or names unfortunately.

Re: Mementos from Aden

I still have the Christmas tree we used in Aden. It's magnificent when put up, but it's a pain in the neck to put together as each branch is separate and each set of leaves on each branch are removable but most are loose so it's up the loft.

My parents Andrew Young and Alice Young (both aged 92 and still going strong) proudly display a silver Arab Dhow and a silver sword which were presented to them circa 1975. They also have a great painting of Ghadir bay

I also have a painting of Ghadir Beach. Lovely blue sky with the mosque in front of our old house. The mosque is no longer there now apparently. Those were the days!

I still have a BP bread knife and use on a weekly basis, must be really high quality as it's never been sharpened
Inherited the Kenwood Chef but let it go about 5 years ago.
