My last visit was in 2010. Had a good time and the locals were delighted to meet us. My friends who live in Crater and Steamer Point have advised me against returning. The place is full of local gangs and there are very few policeman to provide any security!

The situation is not as bad as you say :)
However I would recommend not visiting at this time
