schooling horses

Hi,
I hope someone can help me.
What leg should lead when cantering and how do I tell?

Re: schooling horses

imagine circling to the right, your horses inside foreleg (the one nearest the inside of the circle, which is the off fore) should reach further forward than the one on the outside of the circle (the near fore). Stand and watch someone else cantering to see one foreleg going further forward than the other. When you can tell from the ground, then you can look at the shoulders of the horse from on top and you can tell which is going more forward, (always the inside, ie, right off fore on right rein and left near fore on left rein). You will learn to feel this eventually. It is normally more balanced on the correct leg and you feel a wierd unbalanced canter when on the wrong leg. Hope this helps
