HH&S Btry, 3rd Bn, 13th Arty

My deceased kid brother, William P. Turk, served with the subject outfit in Vietnam, III Corps AO, Tay Ninh Province, home base Cu Chi, between February, 1966 into March, 1967. In reading this web site's history of the 13th Arty, it says that the 3rd Bn received a Meritorious Unit Commendation and three Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm unit awards. Does anyone know of the dates of service for which these awards were made? He participated in the two Counteroffensive Campaigns (Phase II & III) during 1966-67. I think they were named "Operation Junction City". His DD-214 doesn't show either of these awards & I'd like to find out if he was entitled to them. I do know that he is eligible for the individual RVN Gallantry Cross.

My brother died from cancer in 1974 at the age of 28-1/2. He will be inducted into the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund's "In Memory" book at "The Wall" on Patriot's Day, 19 April , 2004. 200 names will be added that day to the book which presently contains approximately 1800 names. This memory book is for those who died after the war was over from ailments caused by their service in Vietnam.

Thank you for any help that you can offer.

Don:

I was there at the same time. However, I don't believe I knew your brother. I am sorry to hear of his untimely death. I was a fire direction chief at the battalion level and participated in every battalion level operation. I don't recall any battalion level awards. I do remember that one battery received a citation when it was operating independely of the battalion on one operation. I think it might have been A battery. They fired so many rounds one night that that they ruined several gun barrels.

Sorry I couldn't give you anything more.

Jim,
