Before there were koi clubs and books that told you what to do. I did what I thought was right.
I decided to change some of the water in the small pond I had. I put the pump in and got involved in another project. You guessed it, I drained the pond. I came back and the koi were flopping around the bottom with no water. I had nothing to lose at this point. Put a hose in and see what happens. The koi survived. Lesson learned put the pump in at the depth of the amount of water you want to remove. Over the years the koi survived many of my mistakes. Some of the koi I have are about 30 years old.
Does anyone want to admit to a mistake that others may learn from.
