Captain John Ledford

My gggrandfather immigrated from England (town unknown) to Wolfe Island where he married Catherine Lyons from Northern Ireland. By the 1881 census John is a sailor and a captain. Please-I need info on where I can research maritime archives of The Islands or Ontario. Many thanks
