I am listing Wolfe Islanders that I have found while researching my Commerford family. My 3rd great grandparents Michael and Bridget Commerford, both born in Ireland, lived and raised their children on Wolfe Island. In 1877 Michael, Bridget and some of their adult children moved to Minnesota. Several other island families, some related, also moved after being encouraged by the Catholic Church to take advantage of the Homestead Act to obtain land. The families that I know were:
To Swift County, Minnesota, Patrick and Susan (Haughins/Hawkins) McDonnell with six children, plus Mary McCarthy
Mary Duffy Turcotte with four children, plus her brother John Duffy and niece Sarah Duffy
Michael and Catherine Walsh with six children
Michael and Bridget (Hawkins) Commerford with four adult children and one grandchild.
James and Hannah Hawkins with nine children
To Chippawa County, James and Ann Commerford McCafferty to Louriston, Chippawa County, MN
Michael and Mary Honan Hawkins also at that location.
My 2nd great grandfather, Thomas Commerford, had settled in Syracuse, NY, earlier but moved temporarily to several places as a stonemason contractor, including work on the Welland Canal.
I hope this information might help someone. I am fortunate in that my grandmother knew her grandmother, Catherine Donegan Commerford, who lived on Wolfe Island after her marriage to Thomas and their first two children were born there.
