I am writing a thesis about Wellington in the Peninsular, 1808-1814. I am interested in the man and the commander more than I am in the minutiae of the battles themselves, important though those are. and hope in due course to submit my thesis for a Doctorate. My inspiration was Antony Brett-James, having been taught by him when I was a cadet at RMA Sandhurst. If any one has any unpublished material that I might be able to read I would love the opportunity to do so. Thank you. Any guidance or advice would simillarly be gratefully accepted. |

THE LATEST NOVEL BY DEVON BASED GRAHAM SCLATER IS SET IN 1812 -1815 DURING THE LITTLE KNOWN WAR BETWEEN ENGLAND AND AMERICA. Devon based publisher Tabitha Books - a division of long time music publisher Tabitha Music Limited, will be publishing the third novel by Exeter based Graham Sclater in the UK in April 2010. The novel already published in America, has been available since November 2009 from Amazon.com and is selling well. This, the third book by Graham is an historical novel following a number of American prisoners-of-war captured after a vicious sea battle off the east coast of America, and about their time spent in Dartmoor depot. The war ended in December 1814 but they remained incarcerated during what was the harshest winter for more than a century with little food and the knowledge that they should have been freed. The diabolical conditions, overcrowding, disease, near starvation and boiling anger caused the prisoners to riot and, on the fateful day of 6th April 1815, following the anonymous instruction to fire on the prisoners, a massacre took place. Soon after the massacre the prison was closed for many years until it reopened as the infamous high security Dartmoor prison. Graham says, “When I first heard about these events in 2002 I couldn’t stop thinking about it and began researching this period. The more I learned the deeper I delved until I started writing the screenplay. As it progressed I felt I had to write the book. It’s taken me seven years but I feel it was well worth the effort.” FROM THE REVIEWS: “Compulsive reading” “It felt like I was actually there” “A story waiting to be told” |

Dear, the webside is very helpful. Congratulations. There is however an inconsistence when refering to two liste Catalan books: Vallverdú, Josep (1923- ) Los amigos del viento (Barcelona, 1979) A translation of Els amics del vent. When their father is captured by Napoleon's soldiers, two Catalan children join a former Frenchwoman in an escape by balloon. SUBJECT: Napoleon -- I, -- Emperor of the French, -- 1769-1821 -- Fiction. Fantasy. Catalonia (Spain) ?? Fiction. Vergés, Oriol. La chica del tambor (Barcelona, 1980) Versión castellana, traducida del original catalán 'La noia del timbal' por Manuel M. Escriva de Romani. Set in 1808 in Catalonia during the Napoleonic invasion, this is the imaginary story of the heroic daughter of a dentist and her part in the resistance effort. SERIES: Los grumetes de la galera SUBJECT: Historical fiction, Spanish. Spanish language materials. Spain -- History -- Napoleonic Conquest, 1808-1813 -- Juvenile fiction. ALT TITLE: Noia del timbal Spanish. As the webside is in English and doesn't seem to be an English translation, the origianl name and references of the edition in CAtalan should be given priority. Then, you could add that a translation in Spanish or English is available. But not the other way round as you do it. And in any case, the way it is incorrectly writen, in the second book after Alternative Title: La noia del Timbal, it should read Catalan instead of Spanish. It might seem something irrelevant but it shows the unfair power of the dominant discourses. It would be nice to see it corrected in the future. In all, the web is excellent and I congratulate you for that. |

I would like to note that a comment on the page "Napoleonic Memoirs" is incorrect. The entry for Sadtler WA - Under Two Captains A Romance of History states that Sadtler himself is John Jacob Lehmanowsky. He is not. Dr. Sadtler was a Lutheran minister in Illinois at a college which Lehmanowsky helped begin. Lehmanowsky died in 1886 (my g.g.grandfather) and Sadtler's book was published later. The original autobiography was destroyed because it was so controversial, and for that same reason I believe Sadtler published it under his own name. The book includes one of the few first-hand accounts of torture at the Palace of Inquisition in Madrid. Lehmanowsky himself had to be escorted several times by police after giving public talks on the capture and destruction of the palace (articles are on file with New York Public Library), and his account was also included in the appendix to the first edition of Foxe's Book of Christian Martyrs. Lehmanowsky is also considered to be one of two possible authors to the book "Life of Napoleon", which is unauthored and on display at the John Hay Center in Salem, Indiana. The other possible author is considered to be Marshal Ney (a local Salem family claims descendency from Ney after he presumable escaped to America). Lehmanowsky also recounts a meeting with Ney in Knightstown, Indiana, and gives his account of how he believe Ney escaped the firing squad in France. I have more information available if you would like. |
