trying to find an uncles grave in aden

Hi. my uncle Cyril Ignatius Edge was killed in an accident at the BP refinery in Little Aden on 30th July 1955. (Four men were killed that day- two british and two lebanese.) I would like to try to visit his grave. Noone from our family has ever been and I would like to do so to pay my respects. His wife, my aunt has just recently died. Does anyone know who i would contact to find out if his grave is still there please??? thank you. Ann Hall Liverpool

Re: trying to find an uncles grave in aden

Hi,

My Dad was not there at the time of your Uncles death, but he does remember one of his friends talking about him. He thinks maybe your Uncle was in Abadan before? and he has a very vague recollection of him. Was the other man who was killed a Scotsman?

Dad suggest you might look at the Graveyard in Khormaksar. During his time a man called Harold Bently also sadly died in an accident, and dad remembers going to Khormaksar. He's not sure if there is a civilian graveyard there, or was part of the RAF graveyard.

Perhaps Jonathan Wilkins would be the best person to ask as he's been there.

Re: trying to find an uncles grave in aden

Hi Ann,

I am not an expert on this subject but am aware that a number of civilians were buried in the Ma'alla cemetery. Sadly the graves suffered badly during the period of unrest following the departure of the Brits from Aden and many headstones and grave markers were destroyed.

I will send you an email with links to pictures of some of the Ma'alla graves and an address of a contact who may be able to help you further in your quest.

Re: trying to find an uncles grave in aden

Hi Ann, I have been in the Christian graveyard in Ma'alla in 2007 and again in 2009 and while it is generally in neglect it is more from wear and tear than damage. It is quite a big graveyard and a good number of the headstones are still readable. Hope this helps.
