I have several relatives that were in the Civil War and I am just now beginning to learn about the 51st Regiment and how my ancestors were involved. I have several HAGA ancestors that were in the Civil War and other names as well. I happen to be working on the HAGA line at this time. Thank you for putting this site up for those of us just starting on this road to knowledge. It is a wonderful site and I love the music as well! D. Rhett |

My 3rd great grandfather, Andrew Joseph Arnold was in the 51 Virginia Infantry, he was from Wythe VA. He enlisted in 1862 and died in 1863, he was only 30, He died of Typhoid Fever, at the Charity Hospital in Gordonville, VA. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Gordonsville VA. I was lucky enough to find a picture of him on the find a grave website. My family all came form Wythe, Pulaski and Piney VA area. I was the first born out of VA(in our family) but I feel a strong spirit of VA in me. |

David C. and James M Neese were my Great GF and Great, Great GF on my mother's side and were captured at Waynesboro and survived Pea Island. Both walked home to Wythe Co after release and returned to peaceful, productive lives running a timber business and farming on 500 acres of prime land (some now part of Jefferson National Forest)on Stoney Fork outside of Wytheville. Family lore is all they had in their pockets when they returned was confederate currency(always the frugal Germans!). My Grandfather--David C's son--was the most gentle and kind man I have ever known. Hard to believe his father and grandfather were men of war. Times do shape a person. |
